Catching Criminal Activity on Darknet Markets

Speaker: Timur Kudabaev

Tor solves a network-layer problem, but running a hidden service is a systems administration problem. This presentation will describe how onion services actually work, and the kinds of mistakes that got operators, vendors, and buyers arrested, based on what we know from court filings. These include things like VPN misconfiguration, a KYC record at an exchange, and a metadata-stripping tool that had quietly changed hands. Catching illicit behaviour is difficult, and the cases we hear about are the ones where something went wrong.

Timur is a math student at the University of Waterloo. He has been using Linux for five years and does systems and network programming.

Engaging with Software Development, Starting from Scratch

Speaker: Mike Herbison, Supply Chain Manager

A supply chain manager with no formal CS background rekindles his endless curiosity for computers at 40 — through courses, books, piles of notes and unlimited stubbornness. Mike Herbison takes us through his journey of discovery for personal interest as well as more serious supply chain development at work, including successes and failures along the way.

Mike has been attending CUUG and sparked his long lost passion for computers while he made a career in Oilfield Services Supply Chain. He's had a blast rediscovering Unix/Linux and coding and also loves playing guitar (particularly 80's rock & metal).
